For example, Schwab and Fidelity offer ETFs that basically follow the S&P 500 and they are nearly free to trade (okay, maybe it is .01% fee). Not only that it is easy to liquidate the money. Having too much sitting in a bank account or invested in gold could mean the money will be less valuable as compared with the stock market in a few years. The story of the rich getting richer is pretty easy to illustrate here too as people who hold stocks have seen their money grow faster than everyone else.
