A Desire to Understand

So often we get frustrated by others who have a view different than our own. Maybe you are a “conservative” and other people tend to classify you as a religious zealot and a Tea Party loyalist. Or maybe you are “progressive” and people tend to look at your sort as an elitist who sees the World through “rose colored glasses”. But most likely you are neither of these, because you are uniquely you.

But when when we classify people into groups like this, we do it to ourselves. Each person is unique. While some people may seem to “follow like sheep” at times, it is easy to automatically make assumptions that are incorrect. I would like to offer a different approach...

Try to understand why people think the way they do. Don’t just make the assumption they are wrong, and start running through all the reason in your mind why they are wrong. That in itself can take us one step away from understanding people and crossing bridges that seemed impassable.

People are right in their own mind. They have reasons why they think the way they do, and often they have very good reasons! If we were to understand those reasons more clearly, we could better see the strength of their position, as well as strengthen our own understanding. Let’s stop treating people as aliens from another planet. The sooner we can do that, the faster we will come together and come to share a more beautiful world.

Best wishes to all!

This is a wonderful concept. And, under all of the name-calling and stereotyping, I believe it is true. Most prejudice and hatred are born of ignorance and misinformation. I can't respond from my own heart because the idea of hating someone because of his color or religion or gender or ethnicity just doesn't compute. I am very fortunate to see and appreciate all people as fragments of the Whole, and if someone disagrees with me, that's OK, too. I have a live and let live attitude, but I cannot stand to see others taken advantage of or ignored, when they need something. I don't need a law forbidding bullying. I will get in bullying's face and kick its ass. My involvement in politics really doesn't have to do with my issues or needs. It has to do with respecting our constitution which claims liberty, truth and justice for ALL. I kinda interpret that as saying, "Hey, if your neighbor is hurting, try to comfort him. If you see someone in need, lend a helping hand." Do I want to legislate this? No. I'd like to think the human spirit would "legislate" it for us. And that's wherein the differences of opinion might start. I don't think a president who believes our country should make affordable health care available to all is a socialist. I am actually kind of embarrassed that a country of our stature has so many uninsured, homeless, hungry people. I get a sad feeling when I think that some people have car collections, while others have no transportation. Some people have many homes, while whole families have no place to live. Do I want to MAKE those with the most wealth give it to the poor? It's not my place or anyone else's, to tell someone "with" how to treat those "without." I just wish they would make the choice themselves. I just wish that the richest country on the planet could be an example to the world--by willingly taking care of its own--and leading by example. I just wish that if people elected to close their hearts and wallets to their fellow Americans, they would admit that and stop campaigning on false premises. I don't think a president who inherited the trillions of dollars of debt and an economy on the verge of collapse should be held responsible for the country's unemployment rate. I also think healing takes time. So, yes, I take the time to understand the issues. But first, I took the time to understand me and what matters to me. I try not to say A and then do B. I work to keep an open mind, and I encourage people to make sure that the news they perpetuate is not more misguided opinion, masquerading as fact.

Haven't met you face 2 face, but you are a wonderful human and I am looking forward to meeting you. Mike and I have a free airline ticket to use. Maybe sometime in the near future, we will visit the windy city.

Thanks for replying on my blog, Debra and Carol. I really appreciate it. I think people have to learn to love themselves, and that love will spread to others. Often when you find people that say terrible things about others, they are also not very fond of themselves.
